About This Place

Nestled quietly on Boylston Street in Boston, Yamato II offers a distinctive All You Can Eat Japanese dining experience that’s both inviting and vibrant. This underground gem combines the artistry of traditional Japanese cuisine with the lively, communal atmosphere of a bustling buffet restaurant, making it a favorite spot for sushi lovers looking to indulge in quality and variety.

At Yamato II, the culinary journey begins with an impressive selection of sushi and sashimi, featuring pristine, sashimi-grade fish celebrated by many patrons for its freshness that rivals even some of the city's most upscale sushi establishments. Menu highlights like the Dragon Roll and Dragon Maki stand out with their perfectly balanced flavors and textures — a harmony of tender fish, creamy avocado, and crispy tempura that will delight your palate on every bite.

For those who prefer to explore beyond sushi, the buffet also includes delectable Japanese staples such as Shrimp Tempura with its light, crunchy coating, comforting bowls of Miso Soup, and the uniquely addictive Crab Rangoon. The inclusion of comforting options like Cold Tofu and soothing Congee adds warmth and variety to the spread, appealing to diners seeking both familiar and adventurous tastes.

Yamato II’s hand roll offerings allow for a personalized experience, with options such as the juicy, uncooked Tuna Hand Roll, the flavorful and tender Eel & Avocado Hand Roll, and the refreshing Cucumber Hand Roll. Each is crafted with care and delivers a wonderful contrast between fresh ingredients and expertly seasoned sushi rice.

The dining room itself feels spacious and lively, often buzzing with conversation — a testament to its popularity. However, evenings can get quite busy and loud, enhancing the vibrant energy but perhaps less suited to intimate conversation. Service at Yamato II is often noted as warm and attentive, highlighted by friendly staff like Vicky, whose personalized touch adds to the overall inviting atmosphere.

One tip for guests eager to explore everything Yamato II has to offer: desserts such as the unique Fried Ice Cream and subtly sweet Green Tea Ice Cream are part of the all-you-can-eat experience, though they might not be overtly promoted. Make sure to ask and indulge in these delightful treats to round off your meal.

While some customers note the vinegar in the rice leans a bit sharp and certain menu items like salmon and tuna sashimi are exclusive to the dinner service, the overall consensus reflects exceptional value—especially considering the high quality of fish and the expansive menu. Be prepared that hosts may courteously remind you that the dinner window is limited to two hours to accommodate the bustling crowd.

In summary, Yamato II stands out as Boston’s go-to destination for sushi enthusiasts craving quality, variety, and lively ambiance without the hefty price tag of a luxury dining experience. Whether you're after a comforting bowl of miso soup or a decadent sashimi deluxe platter, this restaurant delivers a satisfying culinary adventure that keeps customers coming back for more.

rice to fish portions were a little lacking, rice had a little too much vinegar in it making it a little too sour. fish was good tho would recommend white tuna and edamame and salmon. salmon and tuna sashimi and some other things were only available on the dinner menu which was 10 dollars more. service was really good and everyone was really friendly especially vicky

The hosts are a little bit aggressive. From the moment you sit, they make it clear to you that you only have 2 hours to eat. Which is more than enough time. The food was really yummy and fresh! However, the fried rice was not so good. The sushi was great though ! If you go during dinner, it gets so loud and full that you can’t even hear your own thoughts. If you want to take food to go, it will be an extra $8 charge.

Although it can seem a bit pricey, it is fantastic value because of the high quality sashimi grade fish they use! Rivals those of even the fanciest restaurants in terms of freshness, but at a far better price. Even their fried ice cream is great (and a wonderful way to finish off a meal)!

When it comes to AYCE Sushi I think this is the best you're going to find around here. It's tucked away in a corner on Boylston St. and underground which gives it almost a speakeasy type of vibe. When you are in there it is incredibly spacious which was quite surprising although very welcomed. It seemed conversations were flowing at every table and everybody there was having a good time. Perfect for group outings or even a table for two. Service was seamless, our waitress was great and attentive but not overbearing. We were able to hand her our paper with what we wanted and we were met with exactly what we ordered every time. Absolutely no complaints here. The food was solid, they had a ton of options if you're picky and for AYCE I found the sushi quality to be above average. We also had orders of the shrimp gyoza, which were amazing, and the pork katsu which we also found amazing. For dessert they had ice cream options including redbean, green tea and vanilla; all of which were surprisingly good. Overall, $40 isn't cheap but if you're looking for an AYCE Sushi place; I believe regardless of the occasion, this is your spot.

**Pro tip: they add graduate to their receipt, but then when you pay they ask for tip! Don’t be fooled. **Pro tip: if you’re having all you can eat, they wouldn’t tell you about the dessert on the menu, make sure you ask for desserts it’s included! The best maki roll would be dragon roll! A good all you can eat option! Like all the all you can eat options the servants try to ignore you so you can order as much and as often. The food quality was good. I would not personally go for any hand hold sushi because there’s too much rice in them, we asked for sashimi we didn’t get any. The sake was good and we drinks it will come down to $60 per person.

The sushi buffet is outstanding and the quality of the sushis is so good. You can order as much as you want but you need to make sure you finish otherwise you have to pay a fee per person. The service is quick and they also advise you so you don’t put yourself in trouble
